Taxonomic revision of the catfish genus Hemibagrus Bleeker, 1862 (Siluriformes Bagridae) in Thailand
Abstract:
A taxonomic revision of the catfish genus Hemibagrus in Thailand was completed based on all 79 preserved specimens from the collection of Inland Fisheries Research and Development Division, Department of Fisheries, Bangkok, Thailand, Kasetsart University Museum of Fisheries, Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University, Thailand Natural History Museum, National Science Museum and the researchers own collection between 2016 and 2018. 30 morphometric characters, 29 character ratios, five meristic characters and three qualitative characters of the Hemibagrus species were examined. From the preserved specimens, the Hemibagrus species in Thailand could be identified into five species: H. filamentus; H. microphthalmus; H. spilopterus; H. wyckii and H. wyckioides. Identification of the Hemibagrus species is based on a dorsal spine with or without serration on the posterior edge, the dorsal fin reaching or not reaching the adipose-fin origin when depressed, color of caudal fin in life, head width %SL, interorbital distance %HL, length of dorsal-fin base %SL and length of adipose-fin base %SL. Furthermore, the diagnosis, description and distribution of the Hemibagrus species were provided. From this study, it is arguable that the only analytical tool that cannot be used during the identification of Hemibagrus species in Thailand. Instead, the correct identification key should employed to synchronize the qualitative and quantitative characters.
