Abstract:
Zircon is a gemstone composing of ZrSiO4, The brown color in zircon caused by the color center in the structure. It can be turned to the blue zircon by heat treatment at 1000 °C in reducing condition. Previously, dark brown zircon turn to dark blue one, thus, the method to increase the intensity of brown color in zircon can experiment by gamma-ray irradiation. In this study, the UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometry, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractrometry, and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were applied for comparing the characteristics before and after enhancement of the zircon samples from Thailand, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka. According to the results, the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of zircon samples show that untreated zircon samples show the U5+ at around 480 cm-1, 1100 cm-1 and 1500 cm-1 , after irradiation, the intensity 480 cm-1 is increased due to the increasing of dark brown, and after continue to heat, the blue zircon show the U4+ absorption band around 650 cm-1. The FTIR spectra of untreated and irradiated samples show the Si-O stretching at 2500-4000 cm-1, U5+ at 6660 cm -1, and O-H at 4072 , 4252 cm-1 and after heating, the O-H at 4072, 4252 cm-1 disappears but show U4+ absorption of at 4830 cm-1 .The Raman spectra of zircon samples show the ν3(SiO4) stretching at peak 1008 cm -1 after irradiation and continue to heat depending on the full width at half maximum. The XRD pattern of zircon samples, show the decreasing of crystalline and after continue to heat, the XRD show the better structural arrangement.
