Abstract:
Whispering gallery mode (WGM) in optical resonators has widely applications in telecommunications, sensors and also in studying nonlinear optical phenomena. However WGM generated by the third-order nonlinear effects in the resonators have not well understood. This thesis describes the theoretical calculation of whispering gallery mode (WGM) in nonlinear microring resonator (MR) system. The WGM occurred in the MR due to the interaction of third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of InGaAsP and InP semiconductors. The femtosecond soliton pulses at 1,550 nm wavelength were used to excite the Kerr nonlinear interaction. The WGM outputs were adjusted by various parameters such as radius of the microrings, coupling constant, the width of the bus and ring waveguides. The theoretical calculations were compared with simulations using the finite-different time-domain (FDTD) method and the results showed good agreement with the simulations. The applications of the WGM in the MR system for blood flow rate measurement and propulsion generation are also discussed.
