Taxonomy of the Tribe Olethreutini (Lepidoptera : Tortricidae) in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary
Abstract:
Olethreutinae is the second largest subfamily in Tortricidae, order Lepidoptera commonly known as leaf roller moth. Larvae of Olethreutinae are reported as an insect pest on many plant species. Olethreutini is one of the largest tribes in Olethreutinae consists of over 1,100 described species worldwide. Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary was selected as study site because it consisted of various forest type, but there is no report or study of Olethreutinai from this area. This study aims to investigate the Olethreutinai species in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary. The specimens of Olethreutini were collected in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary during August 2020 to March 2021, covered rainy and dry seasons. Four collecting sites were selected; Khao Nang Rum Wildlife Research Station, Huai Kha Khaeng Head Quarter and Khlong Kho and Sub Fah Pha Wildlife Sanctuary Unit. Specimens were collected using light trap. Killing jars with potassium cyanide were used as killing agent. Specimens were set on small spreading board, then dried up in hot air oven at 50 °C. Genitalia permanent slides were prepared. Adult specimens were photographed by DSLR camera with macro lens. Genitalia were photographed by compound microscopes with camera module. External morphology of adult specimens and their genitalia were used for identification to genera and species. Two hundred thirty three of Olethreutini moth were found. Thirty four morphospecies were identified to 27 species in 19 genera. Two species, Hiroshiinoueana curiosissima (Razowski, 2009) and Metrioglypha dualis Diakonoff, 1973 are reported in Thailand for the first time. Two new species, Megalota festuca Pinkaew and Muadsub 2021 and Xenolepis fissurarta Thonongtor and Pinkaew 2022 were discovered and described during this study. This study provided a list of Olethreutini species from Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary and also provided a first report of Olethreutini species from this natural world heritage site.
