Abstract:
One major "issue" in the world of Indonesian contemporary classical music at this time is the overrepresentation of gamelan, the famed set of musical instruments of Java and Bali. The popularity of gamelan has gone all the way since the late nineteenth century when Claude Debussy first caught interest of its sounds at the Paris Exposition of 1889. Since then, gamelan has inspired many Western and Eastern composers particularly for their unique timbre and sonorities. However, as time passes to the present time, gamelan still retains its fame as the most used traditional instrument of Indonesia which becomes a source of compositional inspiration. This thematic paper aimed to address this particular phenomenon as an issue which will be beneficial for the future in encouraging composers to see Indonesian music in a broader perspective, to explore and find new sources of musical inspiration outside the borders of Java and Bali. The newly composed work Indonesian Suite by Indonesian composer Nathan Iskandar, its origin of influence, and its musical analysis are discussed thoroughly so as to prove the expansion of Indonesian art music repertoire beyond the gamelan. The eight movements of the Indonesian Suite, namely Sulawesi, Java, Sumatra, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, Kalimantan, Papua, and Bali, all proven to have adapted elements from the original "welcoming dance" music by borrowing pitch and rhythmic patterns as well as referencing some of the unique musical timbres and instrumentation of one particular "welcoming dance," then transforming those elements into a larger form of musical piece. This thematic paper purposefully acts as a form of recommendation and encouragement for Indonesian composers to produce more Indonesian, non-gamelan inspired works in various styles and instrumentations in order for a true diverse and equal recognition in the field of national musical arts to be attained in the long run. IMPLICATION OF THE THEMATIC PAPER. This thematic paper, particularly Nathan Iskandar's Indonesian Suite, is meant to serve as an introductory approach for listeners to get to know Indonesian music in one set of musical works, add to the number of Indonesian art music repertoire as a form of contribution in the field of national musical arts, and inspire Indonesian composers to write more non-gamelan-influenced pieces.
