A research on the usability evaluation of telecommunication and navigation applications in in-vehicle infotainment systems
Abstract:
Due to the continuous growth in global trends
favoring the development of new energy sources, the in-vehicle
infotainment systems (IVIS) domain has witnessed considerable
expansion. However, evaluations of in-vehicle activities by
national institution have revealed significant safety concerns
regarding the utilization of IVIS for telecommunication and
navigation during driving. Consequently, this research aims to
conduct usability assessments on two widely adopted IVIS
platforms, referred to as Sample A (Android Auto) and Sample
B (Apple Carplay). A total of thirty-one participants will be
recruited to engage in real-world interactions, undertaking
context-driven tasks utilizing navigation and
telecommunication applications. Objective data, encompassing
performance metrics (subjected to two-way ANOVA), alongside
subjective feedback (elicited through System Usability Scale
questionnaires and semi-structured interviews), will be
gathered to explore participants' and users' preferences.
Ultimately, the comprehensive analysis of both datasets and
perspectives is anticipated to reveal Sample A's superior overall
performance compared to Sample B. Additionally, participants
have provided valuable insights into the desired attributes of
novel IVIS and their applications, including variability in visual
presentation, customizable layouts, and simplified navigation
with expanded touch range. In conclusion, this research
conducted a usability evaluation of two IVIS systems and
anticipates broader domain expansion in subsequent related
studies
