The effectiveness of information literacy instruction among nursing students

Abstract: Information literacy is an essential skill for nurses to find an evidence-based practice to improve nursing care. Many nursing schools are teaching information literacy to embed this skill to their students. There is little evidence that showed the best way to teach information literacy. The purpose of this study was to review effective instruction to teach information literacy among undergraduate nursing students for the past 10 years. The included research must provide instruction methods, measurement of actual information literacy, and student's information literacy improvement after the enrollment. All matched evidence was for the intervention, and results of the study were assessed if they could be used as a guideline for information literacy instruction. There were 9 studies found that met the criteria. The results revealed that most of them were collaborative instruction between nursing faculty and the librarian. All of the studies provided learning tasks, activities, and assignments for students. Some of them provided assistance and feedback for student's assignments. Students' information literacy was improved after teaching. A well-designed instruction method with appropriate learning tasks and tools is an effective way to teach information literacy. The findings from this report could be helpful for nursing education as a guideline for information literacy instruction. Nurse educators should select and design appropriate learning tools and activities for practice. Assistance and feedback should be provided to help students gain more understanding and developing their information literacy skills.

Abstract: ทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศเป็นสิ่งสำคัญสำหรับพยาบาลในการสืบค้นหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ เพื่อนำมาประกอบการให้การพยาบาลผู้ป่วย จึงมีการสอนทักษะการดังกล่าวในสถาบันการศึกษาหลายแห่ง แต่ยังไม่พบว่าวิธีใดเป็นการสอนที่มีประสิทธิภาพมากที่สุดสำหรับนักศึกษาพยาบาล การศึกษานี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสืบค้นหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ในระยะเวลา 10 ปี โดยใช้ PICO ในการกำหนดคำค้น ซึ่งงานวิจัยที่เข้าเกณฑ์ต้องเป็นวิธีการสอนการรู้สารสนเทศในนักศึกษาพยาบาล มีการวัดความรู้หรือทักษะการรู้สารสนเทศ และความรู้หรือทักษะต้องเพิ่มขึ้น ผลการสืบค้นพบงานวิจัยที่เข้าเกณฑ์ทั้งสิ้น 9 ฉบับ งานวิจัยทั้งหมดถูกประเมินความสอดคล้องและความน่าเชื่อถือ และความเป็นไปได้ในการนำผลการวิจัยไปใช้เป็นแนวทางในการเรียนการสอนการรู้สารสนเทศในนักศึกษาพยาบาล โดยผลการวิจัยพบว่า ส่วนใหญ่เป็นการสอนโดยคณะพยาบาลศาสตร์ร่วมกับบรรณารักษ์ มีสื่อการสอน กิจกรรม และงานที่มอบหมายให้ผู้เรียนฝึกทักษะ มีผู้ช่วยเหลือผู้เรียนขณะเรียน และมีการให้ข้อคิดเห็น ข้อเสนอแนะป้อนกลับในงานของผู้เรียน และความสามารถด้านการรู้สารสนเทศของผู้เรียนเพิ่มขึ้น โดยสรุป การสอนการรู้สารสนเทศอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพควรมีการออกแบบวัตถุประสงค์การเรียนรู้ วิธีการเรียนรู้ และเครื่องมือที่ใช้ส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ที่สอดคล้องกันเพื่อเพิ่มความสามารถด้านการรู้สารสนเทศให้แก่นักศึกษาพยาบาล สำหรับการจัดการเรียนการสอนด้านการรู้สารสนเทศในนักศึกษาพยาบาล ผู้สอนควรออกแบบเนื้อหา สื่อ และกิจกรรมให้สอดคล้องกัน เพื่อให้ผู้เรียนสามารถใช้เป็นแนวทางในการเรียนรู้ เน้นให้ผู้เรียนได้ฝึกปฏิบัติจริงและสอดคล้องกับบริบทโดยการใช้สถานการณ์ทางคลินิกที่เกี่ยวข้อง พร้อมทั้งมีผู้สอนให้ความช่วยเหลือ และชี้แนะผู้เรียนให้พัฒนาศักยภาพจะส่งเสริมความสามารถด้านการรู้สารสนเทศในนักศึกษาพยาบาลได้
