Effect of ultraviolet-A exposure on the MinD protein oscillation in Escherichia coli
Abstract:
In Escherichia coli, the dynamics of MinD proteins plays a crucial role in positioning a cell division
site. The dynamic characteristic of the MinD protein is the periodic pole to pole oscillation inside the cell
so that it prevents the division sites to be at the polar zones. Even some studies of the UVA effect on the
Escherichia coli were done, the studies on mechanism of cell division are still very rare. Hence in this
work, we investigated the MinD protein dynamics under the UVA irradiation using our previous developed
biophysics-based approach, spot tracking technique. Particularly, for UVA intensity of 100 W/m2 and the
average cell length of 4.5 μm, it was found that the oscillation periods of MinD after UVA is faster than
that in normal condition, approximately 10-20 s for exposure time 30-60 minute. This result may indicate
that UVA may affect the cell division via MinD dynamics oscillatory mechanism. The possible application
of this study is to control E. coli.
