Production planning and scheduling for safety shoe manufacturing
Abstract:
Multi-stage multi-product and batch-production industries like shoes, chemicals, food, glass, pharmaceuticals, tire, etc., face increasing product variety, low product volumes, demand variability, and reduced strategic planning cycle. A good production plan in the production industries is critical for the on-time delivery of customer orders. Determining production planning and scheduling decisions will help to reduce inventory. In this research, the production environment produces semi-finished products at the first production stage and finished goods at the second production stage. A mixed-integer programming (MIP) model is developed to minimize inventory and the difference between the planning of products and actual demand. This model also determines the production quantities of products and the capacity of the resources required to implement the production plan in each period of the planning horizon. The actual demand for finished goods for each period over the planning horizon is an input to the model. The models developed are tested on data for a safety shoe company in Thailand to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed formulation model. This research provides a new proposed model to solve problems for multi-stage multi-product production planning and scheduling in the shoe manufacturing industry. The expectation of the model developed in this research would form the basis for production planning and scheduling decisions in other production environments.
