Narrative function of contemporary jewelry: a case study of Chinese traditional shadow plays

Abstract: The Legend of the White Snake" is a classic of traditional Chinese shadow play and a widespread Chinese folktale with numerous interpretations in art forms such as opera, film and animation. This dissertation documents the research process undertaken by the author, which drew inspiration from “the Legend of the White Snake and created a collection of contemporary jewellery with a narrative function using traditional Chinese shadow puppetry techniques. The entire collection incorporates the perspective and understanding of contemporary jewellery. The final works are presented in the form of jewellery and displayed in a mixed-media installation.The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the narrative function of contemporary jewellery through the integration of contemporary jewellery with shadow puppetry, choosing “I am White Snake as the theme, exploring the integration of contemporary jewellery with traditional craftsmanship, and exploring how contemporary jewellery can become a comprehensive art through cross-border integration. To elevate the quality of the research, the author has thoroughly conducted comprehensive literature reviews and in-depth case studies on the definition of the narrative jewellery style, the artistic characteristics of traditional shadow puppetry and shadow puppets, and the shadow production process.The entire work can be viewed as exploring shadow in contemporary jewellery. When making the jewellery, the author started from the first perspective of “I am White Snake and used symbolic narrative and experience narrative to establish a formal language of unpainted, translucent, partial three-dimensional, large-size, multi-part, combining with the author 's unique way of wearing and experiencing, and finally formed nine groups of jewellery, and explained the creation method and process in detail, and even formed his own craft system. It has even developed its own craft system. These techniques are systematically demonstrated throughout the creation process. As a replicable and verifiable case study, this series of works provides a reference for the development of leather shadows in the field of contemporary art.lt can be concluded that this dissertation work was carried out and achieved results according to the set objectives. A narrative path based on empathetic experience is found for contemporary jewellery, a way of cross-border cooperation with traditional crafts and traditional arts is explored, and the value and significance of contemporary jewellery integrating installation, interaction, performance and other art forms is discovered.
