A high-accuracy circle detection method using multi-angle rotating equilateral triangle
Abstract:
Nowadays, shape detection is widely used in electronic industries such as PCB (printed
circuit board) drill hole detection in circuit assembly production lines and electronics
component detection. The accuracy of circle detection is the most important factor in the
electronic industry's application. Although many circle detection techniques have been
developed, there is still room for improvement in terms of detection accuracy. This thesis
focuses on high-accuracy circle detection because the electronic industry demands large-scale
production with minimal defects. The main concepts are 1. create three sides of an equilateral
triangle from points on the circumference; 2. adjust the side lengths until the scalene triangle
becomes an equilateral triangle; and 3. create a perpendicular line from the middle point of
each side of the equilateral triangle to the opposite corner. Subsequently, the circle's center
point can be detected from the intersection point of 3 perpendicular lines. Then, rotate the
equilateral triangles with various angles and repeat the entire process until it reaches 360
degrees. The experimental results demonstrate that the Ni Vision Builder software consumes
0.499 seconds per image, whereas the proposed algorithm and the Hough Transform algorithm
consume 0.525 and 0.547 seconds per image, respectively. On the other hand, in terms of circle
detection accuracy, the proposed method achieves the highest average accuracy rate at 85.45%.
In comparison, the Ni Vision Builder program and the Hough Transform algorithm achieve
accuracy rates of 64.40% and 29.35%, respectively.
