A corpus-based analysis of descriptions advertising properties on Airbnb
Abstract:
Airbnb descriptions are important sources of information for customers when deciding whether to book a property, while less is understood about the format and writing style employed in these descriptions. The purpose of this study is to look into the rhetorical moves in Airbnb property advertising descriptions. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the most regularly used three-word lexical bundles in this genre. The main purposes of this study are to gain a better knowledge of how property advertising descriptions are written on Airbnb, conduct linguistic analysis, and investigate the multiple communication functions used in the discourse. The corpus for this study consists of 30 descriptions collected from www.airbnb.com in 2023. Each description ranges from 300 to 1,200 words per property and is especially focused on places in the United Kingdom and five European countries with five-star guest ratings and the amazing view category. To examine the data on rhetorical moves, the framework proposed by Van der Vliet and Redeker (2014) has been employed. AntConc was used to identify the most frequently occurring three-word lexical bundles, which included the first two pronouns found in the corpus. The results of the study reveal that Moves 1 and 3 are the most commonly used moves in Airbnb property descriptions, with Move 2 coming in second. Moves 6 are presented in the corpus in the following order, while Moves 5 and 9 are rarely employed. However, moves 4, 7, and 8 are not used in Airbnb property descriptions.
