Photocatalytic studies of ZnSn(OH)6 on the degradation of methylene blue
Abstract:
Zinc hydroxystannate, ZnSn(OH)6, is a crystalline solid with hydroxide perovskite structure. This semiconductor belongs in a group of emerging compounds called metal hydroxystannates, possessing various applications. In this work, ZnSn(OH)6 was synthesized via environmental-friendly co-precipitation method in water at room temperature and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic studies were evaluated from the degradation of methylene blue solution (5 ppm, 50 mL) using 50 mg of the obtained photocatalyst under UV irradiation (λ = 254 nm, 6 W). At pH = 7, ZnSn(OH)6 exhibits good photocatalytic activity as 83 percent of methylene blue was decolorized after 60 minutes. Under basic condition (pH = 11), photocatalyst shows comparable efficiency. However, only 27 percent of methylene blue was degraded at pH = 3. This might be resulting from the fact that the alkaline solution can increase the negative charge on the surface of the catalyst, making it more susceptible to the cationic dye.
