Pretreatment of rice straw and physical-assisted alkali Xylan extraction for Xylooligosaccharide (XOS) production
Abstract:
The bioconversion of rice straw xylan into xylooligosaccharide, the pretreatment of rice straw, xylan extraction and xylan hydrolysis were investigated. The pretreatment of rice straw was delignified by using hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorite, and peracetic acid solutions under desired conditions. Peracetic acid presented that the delignified rice straw accomplished a high content of recovery hemicelluloses as 24.68+0.53 percent of delignified rice straw. At 16 percent w/v of KOH demonstrated the highest yield of xylan as 16.13+0.01 percent of delignified rice straw in alkali xylan extraction. Moreover, the effect of physical-assisted xylan extractions using microwave irradiation and ultra-sonication were carried out. Microwave-assisted alkali extraction (100 watt) provided the highest recovery yield of xylan at 75 percent of delignified rice straw. After that, rice straw xylan was characterized by FTIR and implied the xylan characteristic. The xylan was then hydrolyzed by commercial xylanase for xylooligosaccharide production. The results showed that xylobiose, xylotriose and xylotetraose were found as the main components. Xylopentaose and xylose were found in a trace amount. This research indicated that peracetic acid delignification and microwave-assisted alkali xylan extraction from rice straw enhanced the recovery yield of xylan and rice straw xylan was a promising source for producing high-value added xylooligosaccharides.
