Abstract:
As open dumping of both household non-hazardous and hazardous waste is common in
rural areas. Water and soil contamination with heavy metals is one of the leading environmental
concerns in Cambodia. The current study aimed at monitoring the levels of selected heavy
metals in water and sediment samples from the Chan Thnal reservoir using ICP-OES. Both
water and sediment samples were taken from 6 stations around the reservoir. The results
revealed that the soils of the studied areas were contaminated with Cu (+2), Pb (+2), and
Zn (+2). Additionally, the sediment samples of the stations adjacent to Krang Chek commune
exhibited higher levels of heavy metals than the upstream. The concentrations of Cu (+2),
Pb (+2), and Zn (+2) in the water of the reservoir were in the range of 0.200-1.008 ug/L, 1.010-
1.514 ug/L, and 0.854-12.723 ug/I, respectively. For sediment samples, the concentration of
Cu (+2), Pb (+2), and Zn (+2) were in the range of 3.515-25.345 mg/kg, 3.360-8.374 mg/kg,
and 6.982-39.697 mg/kg, respectively in sediment. Even though the metal ion concentrations
in water and sediment are lower than the standard (WHO/FAO), the higher concentration of
metal ions in sediment has suggested the higher concentration factors. This finding has posed
a potential health risk to the people in that area.
