Fuzzy logic approach for power transformer condition assessment using health index
Abstract:
The power transformer condition assessment using Health Index (HI) method is one of the powerful tools to ascertain the health status of the transformer. The transformer is one of the heavy investment assets in power systems, thus maintaining good health will undeniably optimize operation, and maintenance costs, and enhance power supply quality and reliability. Moreover, the transformers valuable lifecycle can be prolonged and evade unplanned outages. Therefore, to materialize these aims and objectives, research has been conducted for twenty-seven power transformers of Bhutan Power Corporation limited in transmission substations. The operating voltage ranges from 66kV to 220kV, and the capacity of transformers differs from 5MVA to 63MVA.
The Fuzzy logic and scoring and weighting average methods are applied for the condition assessment and HI determination. The excel program is developed to determine HI by scoring and weighting average method. The HI is computed by combining the entire diagnostic test data into nine groups, which are used as input to the respective model developed for the method. Other parameters like visual inspection, load history, maintenance activity, location, and age were also considered for assessment. The on-load-tap-changer condition couldnt assess, due to the unavailability of data with utility.
By contrast, the %HI variation between the two methods is less than ± 5% which is a commendable result. The minimal percentage variation could be due to the efficacy of individual technique. Eventually, the overall result obtained are: 5 transformers fall in the Very Good, 13 Good and 9 Fair condition, concerning the fuzzy logic method. None of the transformers falls into poor and very poor HI categories.
