The study of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) training program for social studies education pre-service teachers
Abstract:
"This study aimed to investigate the effects of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) training program on the enhancement of knowledge of CLIL approach, materials design and CLIL teaching competency in the pre-service teachers, the extent to which the pre-service teachers implement CLIL into teaching, the opinions of pre-service teachers toward the training program. A quasi-experimental research design with mixed method was used in this study. The participants consisted of 14 pre-service teachers from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at a public university in Bangkok. The pre-service teachers received 32 hours of training before implementing a CLIL lesson during their internship. The instruments used in the present study were namely 1) achievement test, 2) materials checklist, 3) observational rating scales of CLIL teachers competencies, 4) questionnaire and 5) interview. The data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. After the CLIL training program, the post-test mean scores revealed that the pre-service teachers knowledge of CLIL approach, materials design and CLIL teaching competency improved with statistical significance (p < 0.05). The findings also indicated that most pre-service teachers implemented CLIL during the training and internship period in the aspects of lesson plan, content, communication, cognition and culture into their teaching at high levels of competency. The findings also suggested that pre-service teachers had positive opinions toward the training program in terms of the components of training program, learning experiences, CLIL materials design and teaching implementation. However, there were some challenges that pre-service teachers encountered during their teaching. Based on the study's findings, it is possible to conclude that the CLIL training program had a beneficial influence on pre-service teachers. As a result, it is suggested that more CLIL training programs for pre-service teachers should be developed."
