Estimation of extreme rainfall in Cambodian floodplain of the Lower Mekong River basin

Abstract: Extreme rainfall events can lead to a natural disaster as well as flood. Understanding of historical in extreme rainfall is fundamental to disaster prevention and risk assessment. Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia, characterized by a monsoon climate and a complex topography that contribute to frequent extreme rainfall event. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the extreme rainfall in the lower Cambodian floodplain of the Lower Mekong River from 1985 to 2011 using six rainfall indices provided by Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI), including Rx1day, Rx5days, R95p, R99p, CWD, SDII. Before calculating the indices, the quality of the data was tested using descriptive statistics and double mass curve. The results indicate that the data from all stations are of good quality. The regional average value of rainfall indices of R95p, R99p, Rx1day, Rx5day, CWD, and SDII are 280mm, 85mm, 80mm, 150mm, 8days, and 15mm/day, respectively. Based on the interpolation of all indices, the highest value of rainfall indices is found in the middle to northeast part of the study area, while the lowest value of rainfall indices is situated in the western and southern part of the study area. The findings from this study could be beneficial for guiding policy makers with information in the region facing extreme rainfall
