Effects of parent-child interactive music therapy on sentence verbalization in a child with autism spectrum disorder
Abstract:
This thesis aimed to examine effects of parent-child interactive music therapy on sentence verbalization in a child with autism spectrum disorder. The participants were a child with autism spectrum disorder and a parent. The music therapy session consisted of 12 sessions including two initial assessments and ten treatment sessions. The treatments were two parts including songs assessment and evaluation. A chosen song was repeated in the evaluation part focusing on parent-child interaction through music making based on interactive music therapy to enhance a child's sentence verbalization with prompts and parent support. Results of this study found that a child with autism spectrum disorder improved his verbalization from verbalizing in single words to verbalizing in three words sentence length including subject, verb, and object. Verbalization rating scale increased from 1.33 to 3. Moreover, parent-child interactive music therapy promoted verbal communication, initiation, and joint attention.
