Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study the factors of the conflicts between the people and the wild elephants as well as the guidelines for conflict management between people and the wild elephants in Phluang Thong Sub-District, Bo Thong District, Chon Buri Province. In this research study, the researcher used the qualitative methods for collecting the data from documents such news agencies websites, the Internet, texts related to the area, theses, academic articles and academic journals as well as conducting the in-depth interviews. The main informants were the leaders in the area such as village heads, sub-district headmen, community leaders, public officers, population (the representatives of the farmers in that area) and academic officers of relevant organizations. According to the results, it was found that the main factors of the conflicts between the people and the wild elephants in Phluang Thong Sub-District, Bo Thong District, Chon Buri Province were the socioeconomic factors including road constructions for transportations and communities prosperities, the increment of the number of the wild elephants and the basic needs including road expansions, electricity expansions, land invasions for living and building houses, and agricultural invasions by the wild elephants. The guidelines for conflict management between people and the wild elephants in Phluang Thong Sub-District, Bo Thong District, Chon Buri Province could be divided into two groups. The short-term guidelines included that were building guard towers, elephant confinement, using humans to repel wild elephants, growing trees, building artificial salt licks, etc. The log-term guidelines consisted that were sterilizing the wild elephants, and establishing committees solving the problems, allocating appropriate budgets for remedies in order to maximize the balance and efficiency of solving
