Factors related to uncertainty among preoperative breast cancer patients in Wenzhou, China
Abstract:
Uncertainty is one of the most psychological symptoms experienced by preoperative breast cancer patients. This study aimed to describe uncertainty and to examine the relationships between anxiety, illness perception, and social support with uncertainty among preoperative breast cancer. 122 preoperative breast cancer patients were randomly selected from the breast surgery ward of one hospital in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Research instruments included the demographic information questionnaire, the Chinese version of Mishel's Uncertainty in Illness Scale (C-MUIS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Pearsons product-moment correlation coefficient. The results revealed that preoperative breast cancer patients had the mean score of uncertainty at a moderate level (M = 61.92, SD = 7.51). There were strong positive associations between anxiety and illness perception with uncertainty (r = .638, p < .01; r = .704, p < .01, respectively). While social support had a moderate negative association with uncertainty (r = -.481, p < .01). The results of this study provide scientific basis for nurses to aware of adverse effects of operation on mentals health of preoperative breast cancer patients including uncertainty and anxiety. Those perceiving higher level of anxiety were more likely to report higher level of uncertainty. Nurses can help to reduce uncertainty and anxiety in these patients by offering emotional support and providing information on the disease, operations procedures, and treatment plan. Adequate social support provides to the patients before the surgery, may help minimize uncertainty and anxiety.
