Enhancing reading ability using phono-orthographic training programme for children at risk of dyslexia : an event-related potential study

Abstract: This study involved the development of a computer program to enhance the reading ability of children at risk of dyslexia by proposing and implementing psycholinguistic grain size theory, multisensory integration, and interactive multimedia. The objectives of the study were to 1) develop a phono-orthographic training programme for children at risk of dyslexia; 2) develop a computer-based reading task for children at risk ofdyslexia; 3) examine the effects of the phono-orthographic training programme on the readingability of children at risk of dyslexia.Forty primary school children at risk of dyslexia in the Chonburi province in the academic year 2021-2022,aged 9 -14 years, participated in the study, and were divided into equal-sized experimental and control groups using simple random assignment.To assess reading ability, a reading task and electroencephalography (EEG) were used. It was found that: 1) the proposed principles and the computer programme developed were able to promote the reading ability of children at risk of dyslexia; 2) reading ability mean scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than their pre-training results and also higher than scores in the control group, however, the reading task reaction time between pretraining and post-training, and also the experimental and control groups, was not different; 3) the N170, N300 and N400 mean amplitudes of ERPs in the experimental group were more negative than their pretraining results, meanwhile, the mean latencies of those ERPs were not different. Comparing the experimental and control groups, the N170 and N300 mean amplitudes in the experimental group were less negative than those in the control group, and the mean latencies were longer. On the contrary, the N400 mean amplitudes in the experimental group were more negative than those in the control group, and the mean latencies were shorter. Furthermore, the results revealed that the brain responses during reading occur in both the left and right hemispheres. It is implied that the training program developed is beneficial for enhancing reading ability. As a result, the findings of this study may be useful in the treatment of children at risk of dyslexia.Finally, the resultsimply that children at risk of dyslexia use different brainregions and reading pathways to compensate for their reading
