English language communication needs and problems of Thai domestic workers

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the needs, lacks of Thai domestic workers in using English to perform their duties effectively and also their wants for future English language training. The study emphasized only listening and speaking skills. The data was collected with a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. The findings showed that Thai domestic workers had demand in listening to employers’ requests, complaints, comments, and a variety of accents. In terms of speaking skills, they wanted to better provide the details of their services, and to be able to engage in phone conversations. A wide variety of English accents caused the most trouble for them in listening. They also had the most trouble in speaking politely. Basic English conversation courses were preferred by most domestic workers. They would also like to have more opportunities to practice through activities, such as dialogues and role-plays. A mix of native and non-native teachers was most preferred by Thai domestic workers
