Lexical bundles in conversations : an exploration of the Bridgerton TV series
Abstract:
This study aimed to examine and analyze the structure and discourse functions of four-word lexical bundles (LBs) found in the Bridgerton TV series. Sixteen episodes spanning two seasons of the series were collected from the Netflix website to create a corpus. The AntConc program was employed to extract LBs based on the minimum frequency threshold and range. Based on Biber et al.'s (2004) taxonomy, the findings indicate that the most prevalent bundles in the Bridgerton TV series are Verb Phrase fragments, accounting for 59% of the total. These bundles are frequently used in dialogue between characters, with a particular emphasis on first and second person pronouns, especially 'I'. In terms of function, stance bundles were found to be the most common, representing 41%. This is because the characters need to convey their views, emotions, thoughts or needs, enabling the audience to comprehend their perspectives. Moreover, specific names referring to character titles, such as 'the new lord Featherington' were observed frequently. This study can serve as a comparative reference for future studies, as there is still limited research exploring classical literature or movies from this perspective
