Psychoanalytic study of the main female characters emergence of self-identity in Black Swan and The Red Shoes

Abstract: This research is a psychoanalytic study aimed to explore the psyche of the female protagonists and their emergence of self-identity in the American film Black Swan and the South Korean film The Red Shoes. Since the two films depict the conflicts of women in different cultures, the films hence represent a portrayal of women and their conditions in the contemporary world. In addition, both films present women’s struggle through the female protagonists. In Black Swan, the female protagonist strives for profession and perfection. In The Red Shoes, the female protagonist experiences difficulties in patriarchal society. Firstly, this study views the identifying signs, symbols, and film elements as a signifier of psychological conditions, repressed identity, and gender representation. To be able to understand the protagonists’ psyches and the emergence of identity, the research employs psychoanalytic theory to study the way that the signs, symbols, and movie elements in the scenes portray the protagonists’ psychological conditions as well as the portrayal of women in contemporary society in both films. It is found that although the female protagonists’ psychological stages and the battle of their psyches result in the psychological breakdowns, their experiences greatly contribute to their self-defined identity breakthrough. The study then compares the reclaiming of subjectivity in both films that represent the struggles and conditions of women in the contemporary world. Consequently, as reflected in the two movies, contemporary women under the patriarchal ideology are still confined with their limited roles. To reclaim their self-defined subjectivity, the female protagonists in both films must break out of patriarchal ideology, conformity, and eventually sacrifice their sanity.

Abstract: งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาเชิงจิตวิเคราะห์เรื่องการค้นพบอัตลักษณ์ของตัวละครหลักหญิงในภาพยนตร์อเมริกัน นางพญาหงส์หลอน และภาพยนตร์เกาหลีใต้ เกือกผี เนื่องจากภาพยนตร์ทั้งสองเรื่องถ่ายทอดการต่อสู้ดิ้นรนของผู้หญิงในบริบทสังคมและวัฒนธรรมที่ต่างกันภาพยนตร์สองเรื่องนี้จึงเป็นเสมือนภาพแทนของเพศหญิงและสถานภาพของผู้หญิงในสังคมปัจจุบัน นอกจากนี้ภาพยนตร์ทั้งสองเรื่องยังนำเสนอการต่อสู้ดิ้นรนของเพศหญิงผ่านตัวละครหลักหญิงทั้งสอง ในภาพยนตร์เรื่อง นางพญาหงส์หลอน ตัวละครหลักหญิงดิ้นรนต่อสู้เพื่อความเชี่ยวชาญในวิชาชีพและความสมบูรณ์แบบ ในภาพยนตร์ เกือกผี ตัวละครหลักหญิงประสบกับความยากลำบากในสังคมปิตาธิปไตย ในขั้นตอนแรกงานวิจัยชิ้นนี้พิจารณาเครื่องหมาย สัญญะ และองค์ประกอบของภาพยนตร์ ว่าเป็นสิ่งบ่งชี้ถึงสภาวะสุขภาพจิตของตัวละครหลักหญิง การเก็บกดอัตลักษณ์ที่แท้จริงและการนำเสนอภาพแทนของเพศสภาวะของผู้หญิงในภาพยนตร์ เพื่อศึกษาและเข้าใจสภาวะทางจิตของตัวละครหลักหญิงและการค้นพบอัตลักษณ์ของตนเอง หลักทฤษฎีที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์หลัก คือ ทฤษฎีจิตวิเคราะห์ เพื่อศึกษาและตีความสัญญะและองค์ประกอบของภาพยนตร์ในแต่ละตอนที่นำเสนอสภาวะทางจิตของตัวละครหลักหญิงทั้งสองและภาพแทนของผู้หญิงในสังคมร่วมสมัยในภาพยนตร์ทั้งสองเรื่อง ผลการวิเคราะห์พบว่าแม้ว่าสภาวะจิตในแต่ขั้นและการต่อสู้ทางจิตจะนำไปสู่ความผิดปกติทางจิต แต่ประสบการณ์ลักษณะนี้เป็นเพียงวิธีการเดียวที่จะนำไปสู่การพัฒนาอัตลักษณ์ที่ตนกำหนดเองได้ งานวิจัยนี้ยังได้เปรียบเทียบปัญหาและการดิ้นรนต่อสู้เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งอัตลักษณ์ที่แท้จริงของตัวละครหลักหญิงในภาพยนตร์ทั้งสองซึ่งเป็นเสมือนภาพแทนการดิ้นรนต่อสู้และสภาวะของผู้หญิงในสังคมร่วมสมัย จากการเปรียบเทียบสภาวะของผู้หญิงที่ปรากฏในภาพยนตร์ทั้งสองเรื่องพบว่าอุดมการณ์ปิตาธิปไตยยังคงกำหนดและจำกัดบทบาทของผู้หญิงร่วมสมัย แต่เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งอัตลักษณ์ที่ตนกำหนดเอง ตัวละครหลักหญิงทั้งสองต้องแยกตนเองออกจากอุดมการณ์ปิตาธิปไตย กรอบจารีตประเพณี และท้ายที่สุดต้องยอมสูญเสียความปกติทางจิตของตน
