Abstract:
Staphylococcus epidermidis has been recognized as a microbial agent causing acne vulgaris. For decades, antibiotics are used extensively to treat the acne however overuse of antibiotics also promote the growth of resistant bacteria. To overcome the antibiotic resistant, fruit peel extracts were introduced as an alternative treatments. In this study, the fruit peel, e.g. lime peel, waxy corn peel, waxy corn silk, sweet corn peel, sweet corn silk and raw mango peel were studied. They were extracted using ethanol and then tested for antimicrobial activity by agar well diffusion method. The results showed that raw mango peel extract had strong inhibitory effects against S. epidermidis inhibition zone was 12.3 + 0.58 mm. This extract also showed the highest free radical scavenging properties on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay with IC50 of 36.62 mu g/mL. Therefore, the raw green mango peel extract could possibly be used as an alternative acne treatment
