Abstract:
A non-destructive method for determination of thorium concentration was studied. A Gamma spectrometry was applied to in-house geological samples for validating the developed method. The samples were individual separated the thorium using an ion exchange resin Dowex 50WX4 hydrogen form. Additionally, the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for determine the thorium concentration, including performing the method validation. The accuracy was found with the recovery in the range of 80-110 percent, while the precision was found within the relative standard deviation criteria. Subsequently, the geological samples were measured and calculated the concentrations using the calibration curves. Using the paired t-test (P=0.05, n=7), the proposed technique agreed well with the ICP-MS technique. The measurement of thorium concentration is applicable for elemental screening with the advantages of less sample preparation for supporting national nuclear regulation.
