Cost-effective transparency sheet-based analytical device for colorimetric detection of folic acid
Abstract:
The colorimetric sensor for the determination of folic acid using transparency sheet-based analytical device (TSAD) was developed. This sensor is based on the redox reaction between folic acid and Fe(III) in the presence of potassium ferricyanide. The mechanism related to the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) by folic acid. After that, a Prussian blue product occurred from Fe(II) and potassium ferricyanide was obtained. A color changed from yellow to blue-green can be observed by the naked eyes. The quantified folic acid concentration was calculated by image processing. Moreover, all parameters affected to analytical performances such as reaction time, concentration and the volume of those two reagents were investigated and optimized. Under optimal conditions, the linearity from 10 to 100 ppm (R2 = 0.9946) was received and detection limit of folic acid was found to be 2 ppm (calculated as 3SD/slope), respectively. This proposed sensor offers a simple, portable and inexpensive device which serves as an alternative method for determination of folic acid in real samples
