Self-perception of practical skills among prosthetic and orthotic students ahead of graduation
Abstract:
The aims of this study were to evaluate final year prosthetic and orthotic students' self-perception of their practical skills and work readiness. A mixed method was applied to conduct the study at Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotic. 27 students participated with a response rate of 93.1%. The questionnaire consisted of demographic data which included 45 questions on students' self-perception of their practical skills and work readiness. The relationship between students' self-efficacy score on practical skills and work readiness was analyzed by the use of correlation statistics. A face to face interview to identify reasons to build their confidence was also conducted. Using content analysis to analyze the data, results showed that students have presented the highest confidence level on Ankle Foot Orthosis and lowest confidence level on hip disarticulation/ hemipelvectomy prosthetics. Moreover, the respondents graded their work readiness with 3.86 out of 5 points. On the other hand, there was no correlation between selfefficacy score on practical skills of the students and their self-efficacy's level on work readiness (Correlation r = - 0.017, p = 0.938.). Further, the content analysis results showed that the students described factors that fit Bandura's theory of the four sources of self-efficacy and the mastery experience was the source of self-efficacy that students mentioned most. Furthermore, the results also demonstrated self-preparation as another factor that affects students' confidence levels. The results suggest that prosthetic and orthotic students lack confidence to perform some kind of devices. The curriculum should be more concerned in the role of increasing self-efficacy on students' practical skills and work readiness.
