Speech act of requests in Thai spoken by Chinese as a second language : a pragmatic study of interlanguage

Abstract: Making requests is one of the most difficult speech acts for foreign/second language students, even though s/he is a high proficiency learner (Lin, 2009; Cai & Wang, 2013; Hsieh & Chen, 2016). This study aimed to investigate the request features: request structures, request strategies, and request modifications used by Chinese learners of Thai in comparison with Thai native speakers. Moreover, it examined the nonnative speakers' pragmatic competence development by using the Discourse Completion Test as the pre- and post-tests. The research participants were 51 Chinese learners of Thai and 66 Thai native speakers. The results showed that, mostly, the nonnative speakers used similar request features as the native speakers. Regarding the request structure, there are 10 main structures mutually used by both groups of speakers, namely HA only; SM only; HA+HA; HA+SM; SM+HA; HA+HA+SM; HA+SM+HA; SM+HA+SM; SM+HA+HA; and Multiple HA & Multiple SM. Concerning the request strategy, both native and nonnative speakers performed the requests according to the five levels of directness: (1) direct strategy, (2) conventional indirect strategy, (3) hybrid strategy, (4) non-conventional indirect strategy, and (5) withholding intentions. Regarding the request modification, the nonnative speakers were able to master most external and internal modifications similarly to the native usage. The most frequent external modifications mutually used by both groups of speakers are alerter and grounder, while the most frequent internal modification is understater. The mutual features suggested that the Chinese learners of Thai have acquired pragmatic competence until they can master most request features in Thai. However, when it comes to the more complex request structures and strategies, the nonnative speakers still lack ability to perform them. Besides, the modification types which only occured in the nonnative speakers' data point out the interlanguage use of request modifications. This study, thus, argues that the specific request features used by native speakers should be directly introduced to L2 learners in the classroom since study abroad programs alone seem not to much affect the pragmatic competence development. The direct introduction of pragmatic skills will assist learners in choice making for request features, as well as foster their pragmatic awareness of Thai requests.

Abstract: การขอร้องเป็นวัจนกรรมหนึ่งที่ผู้เรียนภาษาที่สองหรือภาษาต่างประเทศกระทำได้ยากแม้ว่าจะเป็นผู้ที่มีระดับการเรียนรู้ที่สูงแล้วก็ตาม (Lin, 2009; Cai & Wang, 2013; Hsieh & Chen, 2016) งานวิจัยนี้จึงมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะการขอร้องในภาษาไทยโดยผู้พูดชาวจีนที่เรียนภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาที่สองและผู้พูดชาวไทย โดยศึกษาโครงสร้างการขอร้อง กลวิธีการขอร้อง และการปรับแต่งการขอร้อง นอกจากนี้ยังศึกษาพัฒนาการทางสามัตถิยะวัจนปฏิบัติของผู้พูดชาวจีนที่เรียนภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาที่สองโดยใช้แบบสอบถามชนิดเติมเต็มข้อความ (Discourse Completion Test) เป็นแบบทดสอบก่อนและหลังการเรียน กลุ่มข้อมูลในการวิจัยประกอบด้วยผู้พูดชาวจีนที่เรียนภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาที่สองจำนวน 51 คน และผู้พูดชาวไทย จำนวน 66 คน ผลการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่าผู้พูดชาวจีนมีลักษณะการขอร้องคล้ายกับผู้พูดชาวไทย โดยพบว่ากลุ่มข้อมูลทั้งสองกลุ่มใช้โครงสร้างการขอร้องหลักทั้ง 10 ประเภทเหมือนกัน ได้แก่ (1) HA only (2) SM only (3) HA+HA (4) HA+SM (5) SM+HA (6) HA+HA+SM (7) HA+SM+HA (8) SM+HA+SM (9) SM+HA+HA และ (10) Multiple HA & Multiple SM ด้านกลวิธีการขอร้อง พบว่ากลุ่มข้อมูลทั้งสองกลุ่มใช้วัจนกรรมการขอร้องเป็นไปตามระดับความตรงไปตรงมาของการขอร้อง 5 ระดับ ได้แก่ (1) กลวิธีแบบตรงไปตรงมา (2) กลวิธีแบบอ้อมอย่างเป็นแบบแผน (3) กลวิธีแบบผสม (4) กลวิธีแบบอ้อมอย่างไม่เป็นแบบแผน และ (5) กลวิธีแบบยับยั้งเจตนา ส่วนการปรับแต่งการขอร้องนั้นพบว่า ผู้พูดชาวจีนมีความสามารถในการปรับแต่งการขอร้องด้วยการปรับแต่งภายนอกและการปรับแต่งภายในส่วนใหญ่ ใกล้เคียงกับเจ้าของภาษา ทั้งนี้การปรับแต่งภายนอกที่กลุ่มข้อมูลทั้งสองกลุ่มเลือกใช้มากที่สุดคือ Alerter และ Grounder ส่วนการปรับแต่งภายในที่ปรากฏในความถี่สูงสุดคือ Understater ลักษณะของการขอร้องที่เป็นลักษณะร่วมระหว่างผู้พูดชาวจีนและผู้พูดชาวไทยชี้ให้เห็นว่าผู้พูดชาวจีนมีสามัตถิยะวัจนปฏิบัติมากพอที่จะนามาใช้ในการสื่อวัจนกรรมขอร้องในภาษาไทย อย่างไรก็ตามผู้พูดชาวจีนยังขาดความสามารถที่จะสื่อวัจนกรรมดังกล่าวด้วยโครงสร้างและกลวิธีการขอร้องที่ซับซ้อน นอกจากนี้ประเภทของการปรับแต่งการขอร้องซึ่งพบเฉพาะในข้อมูลของผู้พูดชาวจีนแสดงให้เห็นถึงลักษณะทางอันตรภาษา ผู้วิจัยจึงเสนอให้มีการสอนลักษณะของการขอร้องที่เป็นลักษณะเฉพาะของเจ้าของภาษาไทยในห้องเรียนโดยตรง เนื่องจากการที่ผู้พูดชาวจีนเดินทางมาเรียนภาษาไทยในประเทศไทยเพียงอย่างเดียวนั้นอาจไม่ส่งผลต่อพัฒนาการทางสามัตถิยะวัจนปฏิบัติมากนัก นอกจากนี้การสอนลักษณะของการขอร้องดังกล่าวยังจะช่วยให้ผู้เรียนรู้จักลักษณะของการขอร้องมากยิ่งขึ้นซึ่งน่าจะส่งผลให้ผู้เรียนมีความตระหนักรู้ด้านวัจนปฏิบัติและการขอร้องในภาษาไทยมากตามไปด้วย
