Effects of coloring mandala on anxiety and attention-concentration : a case study of freshmen undergraduate students among one of national universities
Abstract:
This case study was a quasi-experimental research, aiming to explore the effects of coloring Mandala on anxiety and attention-concentration in 39 freshman students from an autonomous institution. The researcher randomly assigned them into two groups: experimental (coloring) and control groups. Anxiety and attention concentration scores were measured by TMHQ-Anxiety domain and Digit Span test in pretest and posttest. After pretest, the experimental group attended to 8 sessions of Coloring Mandala activity for 4 weeks. Descriptive Statistic, Mann-Whitney U Test, and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test were used in data analysis. The results showed no statistical difference between pretest and posttest in anxiety scores of the experimental group. Therefore, we further divided the experimental group into two groups: a group with normal anxiety group and a group with high anxiety group, and we found that anxiety score of the experimental group with high anxiety level statistical significantly decreased in the posttest (pre-test 1.89±.375, post-test 1.59±.474, p-value=.041). Attention-concentration score, was found to statistically increase in the experimental group (pre-test 19.89±3.348, posttest 22.00±3.162, p-value=.003). The coloring Mandala activity effectively reduced anxiety in high anxiety participants and also improved attention-concentration in both high and normal anxiety participants.
