A ubiquitous learning support system for inquiry-based learning using a knowledge management approach in promoting web programming skills of undergraduate students
Abstract:
Ubiquitous learning support systems have been developed and widely enhanced the value of instruction procedures in institutions in the past. However, during developing such systems, the mechanism for triggering students construct tenable knowledge in systematic way has not been proposed yet. In this study, concepts of inquiry-based learning process, knowledge management, and flipped learning were chosen as important strategies. A two-step between group experiments was conducted: the first study compared enhanced inquiry-based ubiquitous learning and conventional inquiry-based learning. 91 second year university students were involved to evaluate whether certain learning approaches affect students' performance. The first study has proven the value of the enhanced inquiry-based ubiquitous learning and yielded suggestions focusing on enabling students to communicate and construct a conception of programming with peer-to-peer and peer-to-teacher interactions during the in- and out-of-class learning process. Therefore, the second study developed ubiquitous learning support system basing on knowledge management model blended inquiry flipped classroom approach. 51 second year university students were involved to examine its effectiveness. The results of the two-part experiment showed that a) the proposed approach effectively enhanced the students' learning achievement, and b) the integration of knowledge management and inquiry-based learning approach into flipped classroom can improve students' learning performance in a web programming course.
