Synthesis and characterization of lignin-modified acrylate adhesive
Abstract:
Lignin-modified acrylate was prepared for acrylate adhesive composition. The modified acrylate was
used to reduce the breakdown effect of fume silica in an adhesive application. The acrylate monomer and
synthesized oligomer, which consisted of lignin-based acrylate (LA), dendritic acrylate oligomer (DAO), and
photo initiator were blended. The ratio of combination and curing time of acrylate adhesive were studied. All
synthesized acrylate prepolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), 'H,
and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ('H and 13C NMR). In addition, the sagging property of
acrylate adhesive was tested by contact angle goniometry. The result showed acrylate group of dendrite
oligomer can improve polymerization reaction and curing rate. Meanwhile, the optimized ratio of lignin-based
acrylate has 78% degree of acrylation. It was found that intensity of C=C double bond group decreased after
UV radiation curing process. Therefore, the replacement of lignin was interesting to study further in the
properties for green adhesive applications.
