Abstract:
The Poisson distribution plays a central role in count data analysis. The most important characteristic of the Poisson distribution is its mean and variance must be equal. In practice, the count data often exhibit the overdispersion, that is the variance is greater than the mean. The negative binomial distribution offers a remedy to this problem. Moreover, the mixed negative binomial distribution is an alternative to count data with overdispersion. The objectives of thesis are to proposed new distributions for count data, namely, the negative binomial-Erlang, the zero-inflated negative binomial-Erlang and the zero-truncated negative binomial-Erlang distributions, to derive parameter estimation of the proposed distributions by using the maximum likelihood estimation and Bayesian approach and to compare efficiencies of the proposed distribution with other distributions. This thesis found that the negative binomial-Erlang distribution, obtained by mixing the negative binomial distribution with the Erlang distribution is an another mixed negative binomial distribution that provided an appropriate fit for count data with overdispersion. The distribution for count data with excess zeros, the zero-inflated negative binomial-Erlang distribution, this distribution is a mixture of a point mass at zero and the negative binomial-Erlang distribution. The zero-truncated negative binomial-Erlang distribution was developed from negative binomial-Erlang distribution, which excludes the feasibility of a zero observations. Some characteristics of the proposed distributions such as mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis are derived. The result of simulation study shows that the Bayesian approach outperforms the maximum likelihood estimation method in all sample sizes of this thesis. Finally, some applications of the proposed distributions are presented.
