Abstract:
The research study on" The Promotion of Buddhist holistic well-being in
schools for the elderly, Roi Et Province" has 3 main objectives: 1) to study the
condition of well-being problems in schools for the elderly, Roi Et Province ; 2) to
study the methods of promoting Buddhist holistic well-being in schools for the elderly,
Roi Et Province and 3) to present innovations to promote Buddhist holistic well-being
in schools for the elderly, Roi Et Province.
This research is a mixed method research by using the form of two research
methods, namely quantitative research that was used to distribute a questionnaire for
the elderly who attended school for the elderly in Roi Et Province and qualitative
research that was used in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with local
leaders, geriatric school administrators, village health volunteers and government
representatives from schools for the elderly people in Roi Et Province.
The results of research found that : physical well-being, the most of the elderly
were suffering from high blood pressure, bone disease, diabetes, dental health
problems about tooth decay, high blood pressure, headache, psychological well-being
, the elderly have very few psychological problems due to the belief in the teachings
of Buddhism. The most of them follow the Five Precepts (Pancasila), have
compassionate hearts and have understanding the possibilities of life, intellectual well-
being, the deterioration of the body results in a decline in the memory of the elderly
which often forgetful blurry, memory short, term memory, it will be affected more
than the long-term memory system, which results in the elderly causing frustration
and unable to learn what to do with short term memory elderly people tend to
remember old stories better than new stories, social well being, there is age difference
problems, being reduced to social roles, not acceptance from society and children,
causing loneliness, reducing the relationship with the community of the elderly.
The Promotion of Buddhist holistic well-being in schools for the elderly, Roi Et
Province found that : physical well-being is the development of the body to be able
to relate to the physical environment in a way that is beneficial, harmless, and knows
how to consume the four factors to the highest value, do not consume according to
the values which may have a negative effect on health, psychological well-being, it
promotes Buddhist holistic well-being in school for the elderly, Roi Et Province, has
gained knowledge, practiced meditation, praying in the morning-evening and before
going to bed, intellectual well-being is a training for the elderly to stay in negligence
not obsessed knowing, feeling at ease, being self-conscious, not thinking too much,
having knowledge and understanding of oneself, social well being, it is able to co-exist
with others such as family members, friends, colleagues and neighbors.
The innovation for promoting Buddhist holistic well-being found that : physical
well-being, it was carried out various activities, namely worshiping-praying, meditating,
being in harmony with the environment, activities age appropriate, self-sufficient living,
psychological well-being, there is activity of mind volunteering to develop the
environment, training the mind to have patience, living a Buddhist way of life aims to
strengthen mental health, mental development to have a good mood, having a happy
mind, intellectual well-being, there is the value learning activities and happy living in
harmony with the environment, there is using Buddhist principles in solving life
problems, social well being, there are activities to build good relationships with family,
community and society.
