Abstract:
The cluster approach had an important role in supporting and developing SMEs. Several studies revealed that cluster approach could help SMEs to grow and sustain their business. Thus, this research aimed to study on cluster approach that strengthens competitiveness of Chiang Rai SMEs in food processing industry. The research objectives were: (1) to explore the problems affecting competitiveness of Food Processing SMEs in Chiang Rai, (2) to study the key successful factors of cluster in food processing industry from case studies, and (3) to propose and validate the cluster model for food processing SMEs in Chiang Rai. This study was done by using multiple qualitative research methods to complete the objectives. Multiple qualitative research methods allowed researcher to study relatively complex entities or phenomena in a way that is holistic and retains meaning. The selected methods were documentary research, case study, participant observation and interview methods. The interviews and observation were conducted to food processors, government officers and concerning organization officers in Chiang Rai during April to September 2017. The results from this study have achieved the objectives, the researcher found that: (1) food processing SMEs in Chiang Rai are facing to seven problems that affected their competitiveness, (2) the cluster key successful factors are potential actors, the proper role of each actor, cluster activities, collaboration and trust from cluster members, and (3) based on the validation by key informants, the proposed cluster model is practical and can deliver the solutions to strengthen competitiveness of food processing SMEs in Chiang Rai.
