Abstract:
The objective of this research is to propose a new mixed Poisson distribution for over-dispersed count data based on the new generalised Lindley mixing distribution, namely the Poisson-generalised Lindley distribution. It is both of unimodal and bimodal distribution. In addition, the properties of proposed distribution such as the moment generating function, probability generating function, first four moments, and its special cases are also derived. The methods of parameter estimation for the Poisson-generalised Lindley parameters, which are the maximum likelihood estimation, and Bayesian approach, have been studied via a simulation study. The simulation results can be observed that the maximum likelihood estimation is a highly competitive method compared to Bayesian approach with weakly informative prior distribution. Additionally, the Poisson-generalised Lindley distribution was applied to fit some real data sets using the maximum likelihood estimation. The results based on pvalue of the discrete Anderson-Daring test and the log-likelihood values show that the Poisson-generalised Lindley distribution is the most adequate among the considered distributions for all data sets. Therefore, we can conclude that the Poisson-generalised Lindley distribution is an alternative model to describe count phenomena.
