Developing metacognitive capacity of high school students in teaching chemistry
Abstract:
Metacognition is self-awareness that enables learners to pay more attention to what they are learning.
The objective is to investigate the metacognitive capacity of high school students in learning Chemistry in Ho
Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Then use the results to propose solutions for developing better
metacognitive capacity in the study subjects. The study employed 271 high school student participants in
HCMC to provide their opinions regarding the problems, causes, and recommendations. . With convenience
sampling and survey as the research design, the research is a quantitative study with numerical data as a result.
The results showed that: the metacognitive capacity of the participants is still limited and with no difference
in metacognitive capacity between the public and private school groups, except for the planning factor, the
private school group performed better. From the survey results, the chemistry study notebook in combination
with the teacher's guidance were proposed as the approaches to improve metacognitive skills. The study
conducted a test on a group of 31 high school students for 2 months. The assessment was done before and
after the intervention with a questionnaire to evaluate the development of the quantity and the quality of
metacognitive skills. This intervention was initially effective in improving the metacognitive capacity of high
school students.
