The development of an extruded heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to investigate the development of base catalyst
using calcium oxide (CaO) from mussel shell. CaO was supported on glass using
sodium silicate as binder for the extruded catalyst production. Extruded catalyst was
used for biodiesel production via the transesterification reaction. The research analyzed
the characteristics of extruded catalyst with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Xray
Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The
diffraction pattern was observed at an angle of 34.20o represented CaO, indicating that
the CaO was a major phase of the mussle shell. The morphology of the extruded
catalyst was homogeneous fused and slightly jagged. The maximum yield was
81.62 percent wt at the ratio of CaO to glass of 70:30 by weight, the molar ratio of 9:1,
catalyst loading of 15 percent wt, the reaction temperature of 65oC, the stirring rate at 850 rpm
and reaction time of 2 hrs.
