Abstract:
The objectives of this research were: 1) to study the philosophical concepts of utilitarianism; 2) to study the philosophical concepts of John Stuart Mills utilitarianism; 3) to analyze the philosophical concepts of John Stuart Mills utilitarianism in business. This study was carried out utilizing documentary research, and the data were collected from primary and secondary documents before being studied by the descriptive analysis according to the inductive method.
The results of the research were as follows:
1) The concept of utilitarianism is an action aimed at the benefit of the public. The benefit has a criterion for judging actions that importantly focus on the outcome of the action, not the act. Some actions that are wrong but beneficial to many people will be accepted.
2) John Stuart Mills utilitarianism is considered as judging the ethical values that the act is good and bad based on its benefits or any action that brings happiness to the masses for the longest, best, or most rightful. Any action that causes suffering is considered a bad action. Everyone's happiness determines the value of one's behavior. Goodness and happiness are the same things as one cannot absolutely judge an action as right or wrong.
3) John Stuart Mills utilitarianism in business is to create happiness for consumers, so it is what entrepreneurs should do regardless of the production of quality, fair and desirable products of consumers if the consumers are happy to buy products or receiving services that the business has created. These consumers will have an impression of the products and services, causing the salesperson to earn income from the operation of the business, and it brings happiness to entrepreneurs who earn profits from producing quality products to consumers.
