A corpus-based study of English synonyms : expensive, costly, and pricey
Abstract:
This study examines three synonyms: expensive, costly, and pricey in terms of their meanings, degrees of formality, and collocations. The Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, The Longman Online Dictionary of Contemporary English, and The Oxford Advanced Learner's Online Dictionary were consulted for the meanings, definitions, and sentence examples of the adjectives. To investigate the degrees of formality of the adjectives, the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) were examined for frequencies of the three synonyms across eight genres which are spoken, fiction, popular magazines, newspapers, academic texts, TV and movies subtitles, blogs, and other web pages. To study their collocations, noun collocates of the adjectives in COCA were examined to see nouns that are used with these words and their semantic preferences. Concordance lines were studied to see how these synonyms are used in authentic situations. The results showed that the dictionaries consulted state the synonymy of these adjectives with a sense of requiring a large sum of money as their shared definitions. In terms of the degrees of formality of these adjectives, according to COCA, they are mostly used in similar contexts which are magazines, newspapers, and blogs. However, regarding the collocations of these adjectives, there is only one word alternative that co-occurs among them. Therefore, English users need to consult several authentic language sources and devote a considerable amount of time with English to produce correct language elements
