Abstract:
The objective of this study was to examine the type of latex for preparing
natural rubber (NR) glue to use as an insect glue trap in the agricultural industry. Three
types of latex were used, namely, high ammonia concentrated latex, fresh latex, and
skim latex. The glue property was characterized by holding-power test, which was
related to measuring the time required for the bonding to fail. Effects of rubber
concentration and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) amount were also studied. The
results showed that the effect of latex type was stronger than the effects of rubber
concentration and SDS amount. It was related to the molecular weights of rubber
chains. Among the three types of NR latices, HA provided the glue with the longest
holding time, and hence, being the best potential for use as a raw material.
