The study of barriers and strategies towards English language communication of Thai staff working in Khon Kaen international marathon event
Abstract:
The primary objective of this study was to identify obstacles affecting English communication between Thai employees and foreigners, as well as to investigate the most prevalent tactics employed by Thai workers during the Khon Kaen International Marathon event. A mixed-method design was used in the study, which included questionnaires and interviews with 39 participants who played particular roles in part of the correspondence in English, either written or spoken, from relevant departments. The questionnaire data was analyzed using the Statistics Package for the Social Sciences Program (SPSS), which contained numerical data in percentages (%), Mean (M), and Standard Deviation (SD). Thematic analysis was used to evaluate the data from interviews, which were transcribed and examined. According to the findings of the survey, the most prevalent obstacle experienced by most participants was a lack of English understanding, as well as the use of jargon and slang by both groups of respondents. Furthermore, the techniques used to overcome communication difficulties were more familiar with risk-taking strategies, particularly social-affective tactics along with employing nonverbal language to clarify messages
