Vehicle routing design for a small logistics service provider
Abstract:
Most logistics companies are currently facing with sophisticated decision-making problems that
must be done in a timely manner, usually on a daily basis, such as transportation and vehicle dispatching.
While the fundamental of their operations is the same, that is, making on-time deliveries at the lowest
cost, the detailed settings may vary depending on the existence of rules and regulations posing by those
related stakeholders. In order to improve operational efficiency, many Decision Support Systems (DSS), or
Transportation Management Systems (TMS), are then devised to help enhance such plans, focusing on
transportation cost reduction and vehicles' utilization improvement. Our proposed TMS is one of them
whose concept is based on the mathematical formulation of a Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) variant,
where one-dimensional loading and time window constraints are taken into account. The computation
results indicated that our proposed TMS could help the case study company reduce both total
operational cost and the numbers of dispatched vehicle daily significantly.
