Abstract:
Peroxide prevulcanized natural rubber/silver nanocomposites were prepared by in situ
formation of silver nanoparticles. The formation of silver nanoparticles in the composites was
observed by UV-Visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UVVisible
absorption spectra had the absorption peak around 430 nm, which correspond to
characteristic pattern of spherical silver nanoparticles shape. The TEM images show that
silver nanoparticles had a spherical shape with particle size in the range 5-10 nm. The
nanocomposites could release silver ions and exhibited bacteriostatic activity against grampositive
bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli).
Moreover, crosslink density and tensile properties of natural rubber/silver nanocomposites
were determined by swelling method and tensile testing, respectively. Silver nitrate
concentration up to 2000 ppm slightly affected on %swelling and hence tensile properties of
peroxide prevulcanized natural rubber
