Abstract:
Effects of preparation variables on formation of gold nanoshell were revealed. Two
types of colloidal gold nanoparticles were prepared by two reduction methods, trisodium
citrate reduction and mixed trisodium citrate/sodium borohydride reduction. The silica
colloid was prepared by seed-mediated growth method and functionalized with two linkers,
3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) or polyethyleneimine (PEI). The synthesized gold
nanoshells were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy
and dynamic light scattering techniques. It was found that gold nanoparticles with the size
ranging from 5 to 50 nm were synthesized and attached on to the monodispersed silica cores
(~100 nm). The SiO2@Au core-shell was found to be fabricated with partial and complete
coverage of Au depending on the type of linker used. The PEI linker exhibited better
coverage in nucleation and shell formation, resulting in the encapsulation of the gold
nanoshell. The smaller-size gold nanoparticles prepared via the mixed trisodium
citrate/sodium borohydride reduction exhibited better attachment of Au to the SiO2 core
surface
