Abstract:
Thailand export trend of fruits is increasing over the years. Unfortunately, some fruits have been damaged during transportation due to the presence of moisture. The moisture generated in fruit packages can cause the microbial spoilage in products. Therefore, the packaging films have been developed to extend shelf-life of fruits. In this research,
fruit packaging films from PLA/PBAT blend incorporated with silver-containing zeolite 5A using (3-aminopropyl)
triethoxysilane (APTS) as modifying agent were fabricated by cast film extrusion process. Effects of zeolite loadings (1, 3, 5wt%) and cation exchanged zeolite with silver ion (Ag+) on morphological and mechanical properties including
water absorption of PLA/PBAT composite films were investigated. It was found that the compatibility between PLA/PBAT matrix and zeolite was enhanced by silver ion incorporation. Tensile strength and Youngs modulus of the composite films increased with increasing zeolite loading. In addition, adding silver ions contents improved tensile
strength and Youngs modulus of the composite films when compared with the ones without silver ions. The water absorption of PLA/PBAT films increased by adding zeolite contents. Furthermore, films incorporated with Ag-zeolite
at 3wt% had the highest water absorption, hence it should be suitable for absorbing moisture within the fruit packages occurring during transportation and preservation
