Abstract: Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) based on bromobutyl rubber (BIIR) and polypropylene (PP) combine the good melt processability and recyclability of PP and the excellent elasticity and gas impermeability of BIIR to replace the thermoset rubber in seal applications. This research aims to prepare thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) from BIIR and PP by the melt mixing and compression molding processes. The ratio of BIIR to PP was fixed at 65:35. Nucap® 290W as a silane-treated clay (SC) was introduced into the TPO and TPV at 80 parts per hundred of rubber (phr). The physical and mechanical properties of the filled and unfilled TPO and TPV were comparatively studied. The results showed that the incorporation of SC at 80 phr into the TPO and TPV could enhance the elongation at break and the hardness of the composite materials, while the tensile strength and tear resistance of both TPO and TPV tended to decrease. In addition, the filled TPV showed an increase in the tension set and compression set compared to those of the unfilled TPV. The superior in all mechanical properties was obtained in the case of unfilled TPV. The SEM images of the fractured specimens revealed that the unfilled TPV had a fine and unique microstructure compared to the unfilled and filled TPOs and the filled TPV. The self-sealing capacity could achieve in terms of TPVs. According to this study, the unfilled TPV was the most suitable material to be considered for the sealing applications such as gaskets, stoppers, and o-rings that require good elasticity (low tension and compression sets) and tear resistance
