Abstract:
The present study embedded one group pretest-posttest experimental research design to study the impact of the integration of scaffolding strategies with the writing process approach in improving the ninth-grade Bhutanese students descriptive writing skills. Thirty ninth-grade Bhutanese students studying in Dagapela Middle secondary school under Dagana District, Central Bhutan for the academic year 2020 were sampled to participate for fifteen weeks. The quantitative data were collected using pretest and posttest, and a formative assessment to see the disparity between participants writing scores and then determine the level of improvement. Then, a perception questionnaire was administered to determine students perception of the treatment. The descriptive statistical analysis of the data revealed significant improvement in students descriptive writing skills in post-test, compared to the pre-test. In addition, participants perceived that scaffolding strategies with the writing process approach met their needs in descriptive writing. This indicated that the integration of scaffolding strategies; expert scaffolding, reciprocal scaffolding, and self-scaffolding with the writing process approach have positively affected the students confidence in descriptive writing. The promising findings of the study could urge the Bhutanese curriculum designers and English teachers to integrate scaffolding concepts and writing process approaches as an alternative teaching pedagogy to best teach writing.
