The effects of the use of literature in intercultural language teaching and learning on Thai students' critical reading skills and cultural awareness
Abstract:
This research aims to investigate the effects of the use of literature in Intercultural Language Teaching and Learning on Thai students critical reading skills and cultural awareness. The participants were twenty Mathayom 5 (Grade 11) high school students at a Thai private school. A quasi experimental research design was used. Data collection instruments included pre- and post-tests, Critical reading comprehension quizzes, and journals. Data were analyzed by mean scores, standard deviation, and paired sample t-test. Findings reveal that based on the pre- and post-tests and critical reading comprehension quizzes, students overall critical reading skills have been significantly improved through the treatment. In terms of cultural awareness, the pre-and post-tests revealed that the students overall cultural awareness has been significantly improved. However, based on journals, students cultural awareness has not been significantly improved. The study recommends that for the development of critical reading and cultural awareness, students need to be exposed to the diversity of cultural reading materials. In addition, through the use of literature in the intercultural language teaching and learning teaching phases: comprehending, comparing, evaluating, and collaborating, students will gradually develop critical reading skills and cultural awareness simultaneously.
